Does my dog have a respiratory allergy?
Dogs can get allergic reactions from inhaled substances. These can be substances that are present in the air during a certain period of the year, such as grass seeds and plant pollen. But also substances that are always in the vicinity of the dog can be bad.
Symptoms of respiratory allergy in dogs
- Problemssuch as itching of the head, paws, armpits or groin. Also, the coat becomes thinner and the skin red.
- Prone to ear infections
These types of skin complaints are called atopy and are similar to the complaints that dogs get if they have a food allergy or intolerance. This can make a good diagnosis difficult.
- Sneezing, tearing eyes or watery nasal discharge.
If the dog is otherwise not sick and the run-out is clear and comes from both nostrils, the dog may suffer from an allergy. Try to find out what causes this allergy and avoid it as much as possible.
Treatment of respiratory allergy in dogs
If you are unable to find out the cause of the allergy, go to the veterinarian, who can take an allergy test. Immunotherapy, also known as hyposensitization, often makes dogs less sensitive to the substances that cause their symptoms. However, this therapy will never completely cure the allergy; therefore, try to keep the cause of allergies away from your dog and use suitable natural products to support your dog's airways and resistance.
